Frank Dinges Drug Store
Company Names, addresses, dates:
C.F. Hisey Drug Store, (Frank Dinges Manager) Edinburg VA (1900-1905) 4,5
Peoples Drug Store (Frank Dinges Proprietor), Edinburg VA (1905-19??) 6
Notes:
Frank Cameron Dinges Sr. (1875-1954)1 started working at the
Fletcher's Drug Store in Harrisonburg, VA
in 18962.
In November 1899, he resigned from Fletchers and took a job in Newpoert News, VA3.
Apparently that didn't last long, because a few months later in January 1900, he came
to Edinburg and took a job at the C.P. Hisey drugstore, as Hisey had recently passed
away4.
In April of 1905, he resigned as manager of the Hisey drug store, and 2 months later in June
1905 he opened the Peoples Drug Store.5,6
The location was at the "Whightman Building" on Main Street.7 I don't know where
that building is or if it still exists.
I don't know how long the Peoples Drug store lasted.
According to a plaque in the Edinburg/Madison District Museum, Frank's son, Frank C.
Dinges Jr. took over the store for his father. Frank Sr. was listed as a drug store
owner in the 1940 US Census, so Frank Jr. probably took over some time after that.8
One of the bottles below has a date from 1951, so the store lasted at least that long.
The latest newspaper mention I could find of the Peoples Drug Store in Edinburg was
from 1962.
In 2019, I spoke with someone who had lived in Edinburg for a while, and she said the
original building for the Peoples Drug store was gone, but the later location was at
the "Murray's Fly Shop" building. That building is at 121 S. Main Street.
Peoples drug store was a drug store chain.
