Tate's Drug Store
Company Names, addresses, dates: 1
Tate's Drug Store, 320 Princess Anne Street, Fredericksburg VA (ca.1930-ca.1940)
Tate's Drug Store, 503 Princess Anne, Fredericksburg VA (ca.1940-1955)
Notes:
Stuart Morris Tate Jr. (1884-1934)2 started the Tate's Drug Store.
Stuart was an African American, and his drug store serviced African Americans3.
Stuart passed away in 1934, but his drug store continued.
A 1938 Fredericksburg city directory lists Allen M. Bowles as the manager of Tates Drug Store.
The 1940 US Census lists Stuart's widow, Stella H. Tate as the proprietor. She and
Stuart had a son,
Coleman Maurice Tate (1920-2001)4,
but he was listed as being in school in that year's census.
The 1950 US Census lists Stella as the store owner, and Coleman as the store manager.
The store is listed in the Fredericksburg city directories at address 320 Princess Anne Street
in the early years, and at 503 Princess Anne Street from 1944 up to 1955.
It's not listed at all from 1956 on, so presumably it closed down about 1955.
The earlier address (320 Princess Anne Street) is at the corner of Princess Anne and Frederick
Streets. The current building at that address is depicted below. Currently there is only a
parking lot at 503 Princess Anne Street, so the building that was there is now gone.
