Notes:
James Little Avis (1844-1927)4 was the son of Captain John Avis, who was the sheriff of Jefferson County VA (now West Virginia). James took part in the capture of abolishionist John Brown in 1859. James served in Stonewall Jackson's brigade in the civil war. He came to Harrisonburg in 1869 and started his drug store, which he ran for about 57 years. 1

His store was previously owned by Dr. S.M. Dold, and was located between the American and Hill's Hotel. 5
I don't know exactly where that was, but I suspect it was at 83 South Main Street, which is the address where it shows up in directories starting in 1912 (earlier directories simply said "Main street" if they had any address at all).

James L. Avis was president of the Virginia Pharmacists Association in 1897 & 18986.

James passed away in 1927, at which time his son, Payne M Avis, ran the drugstore. The drugstore lasted until 19402.
