Notes:
Matthew Emerson Layman (1897-1964)5 was the owner and proprietor
of Layman's Pharmacy, and his wife,
Thelma Blanche Lugar Layman (1901-1993)6
was the pharmacist.
They operated the Layman's Pharmacy in New Castle for over 4 decades.7
Layman erected a new building on main street in 1958, at a cost of $55-$60,000.
His pharmacy occupied a major space on the first floor.
From looking at the photo of the store in the newspaper article that
announced the new building, it appears that it is the building at modern
day 161 Main Street. 8
At some point, their son,
Robert Garrett Layman (1925-2007)8 took over,
and he was also aided by his wife Dorothy Mae Webb Layman 9
Based on the label on the bottle shown below, this pharmacy was part of the
the Rexall chain of drug stores .
