C.C. Henkel
Company Names, addresses, dates:
C.C. Henkel's Drug Store, New Market, VA
Notes:
Dr. Casper Coiner Henkel (1834-1908)1
was described as one of the most prominent physicians and surgeons in Shenandoah
County in his obituary. He was a surgeon in the civil war, and performed in
29 battles involiving the army of Northern Virginia. He resumed his practice
in New Market after the war ended. 2
Caspar's practice was originally associated with his uncle, Dr. Solon P.C. Henkel
3.
The Henkel family medical letters4
document some letters that were sent to and from Caspar Henkel, as well as other members of the
Henkel family. Some of the letters seem to indicate that Solon Henkel had a drug store in New Market
as early as 1863, but I couldn't determine if Caspar took over that drug store, or started
his own separate drug store.
The web site for the letters4 includes a receipt from August 8, 1887, that indicates Henkel's drug
store was "adjoining his office".
One of the bottles below is for Henkel's Horse Liniment. I've seen newspaper ads for this liniment
from 18725 to 18956.
