Notes:
In the 1892 Norfolk city directory,
John Wimbish Montague (1866-1943)2
was listed as a travelling salesman, and
Ernest F. Hudgins
was listed as a shipping clerk.
In the 1894 directory, they had teamed up to create the
Montague & Hudgins drugstore, at 473 Church Street. The site
was formerly the "Hugh H. Tebault" drugstore.
That same year (1894), the partnership disolved, with Hudgins taking
over the drugstore. 3
At some point he took on
W. J. Shepard as a partner, but that partnership disolved
in 1895.4
Hudgins seems to have moved out of Norfolk by 1896, as he no longer
showed up in city directories, and
Waverly L. Conway
took over the drugstore at 473 Church Street (which got renumbered
to be 733 Church Street).1
Meanwhile, Montague opened a drugstore at 523 Church Street (which
later got re-numbered to 809 Church Street).
This time he was partnered with his brother
Robert L. Montague.
In 1899, a Grand Jury investigated their business, after their younger brother
Lewis B. Montague Jr alledgedly compounded prescriptions without
a license.5
I don't know what became of the investigation, but the business was not
listed after the 1900 city directory.1
