Notes: Samuel Woodruff Snyder (1832-1912)3
fought in the Civil War. I couldn't find any details about his rank
or where he fought, but there were a couple of his letters to home
during the war, depicted on ancestry.com.
After the war ended, he opened a drugstore in Petersburg at 177 Old
Street, at the corner of Cross Street. 2
According to his obituary in 1912, he had been a druggist on that
corner for 55 years, which means he would have opened the drug store
about 1857. I couldn't find any evidence of that, but I don't have
access to many references before the civil war. 4
It seemed odd to me but the US Census from 1880 as well as some of the
Petersburg city directories indicate his home was at the same address
as his store. Maybe the drugstore had an upstairs living space or something?
Samuel passed away in 1912, apparently ending his drug store business.
His son Samuel S. Snyder was listed in the 1910 US Census as the
bookkeeper for the drugstore, but apparently he didn't take over
his dad's business.
