Notes:
Julius Kindervater (1833-1878)3 was born in Bavaria4.
He was a Captain for the Confederate army in the 2nd Regiment of the Virginia State Reserves
during the Civil War5.
In 1855, he was working at the
L. Wagner drug store, where he was described as an apprentice
educated in Germany6. His name shows up in several articles & advertisements
from the "Richmond Anseiger", a German newspaper from Richmond, but it's hard to translate
them to English. One thing that stood out is that there were advertisements for
"Kindervater's Bitters", sold by L. Wagner, so apparently Julius had created his own
bitters7.
By 1866 he had opened a drug store with partner George A. Bock at 194 Broad Street,
and later 504 East Broad Street.1,2
Some newspaper ads say that they had experienced physicians at their drug store who would give
free medical advice between 10 and 12 o'clock8.
In 1870 he opened his own drug store at 6 West Broad Street. He passed away in 1878, and in
1879 his fully stocked drug store was put up for auction9. The 1881 City directory
for Richmond indicates that it was Charles E. Anderson Jr. that bought his drug store.
