Notes:
Robert Johnson Thornton (1865-1926)4 owned a pharmacy in
Roanoke VA, starting about 19061.
He teamed up with
George Wesley Thomas (1861-1952)5 in 19162.
George's sons, Frederick Wallace Thomas and Roy Raymond Thomas were both
listed in the 1920 US Census as working in a drugstore, so presumably
that was the Thornton-Thomas pharmacy.
Some sources refer to the address of the drugstore as "Opposite the
Post Office", some refer to it as "315 1st Street", and still others
refer to it as "315 Market (1st) Street". I assume these are all
referring to the same building.
The Thornton-Thomas pharmacy is not listed in the 1922 Roanoke city
directory, but the "Thornton Drug & Cigar Store" was (at a different
location), so presumably George Thomas dropped out and Robert Thornton
opened a new store at a new location. That didn't last long,
as the 1924 Roanoke city directory indicated the store at that
location was taken over by the
Turner Drug & Cigar Store.1
Thornton passed away a few years later, in 19264.
