Dr. N. Wayt

Company Names, addresses, dates:
  Dr N. Wayt & Bro, 16 W Main St., Staunton VA (1866-1904) 1

Notes:
Dr. N. Wayt & Bro refers to Doctor Newton Wayt (1837-1904)2 and his brother John Howard Wayt1.
Dr Wayt was a surgeon for the Confederate army in the Civil War. In 1866, he teamed up with his brother and opened a drug store in Staunton. 1

Advertisements for the Dr. N. Wayt & Bro drugstore appear in Mary Baldwin College yearbooks between 1892 and 1901. They list the address as 16 W Main Street. I believe Main Street is now called Beverly Street. He was described as 5'8" tall with grey hair in his 1890 application for a passport. A 1904 city directory listed the drugstore (still called "Dr N. Wayt & Bro", even though his brother died in 1901), so apparently Dr Wayt stayed in business up until the year he died. That directory entry lists William C. Marshall as the manager of the drugstore.

I don't know why these bottles say "PHARMACISTS" and the others all say "DRUGGISTS".

wayt_03 Clear 5.0" bottle embossed:

I'm guessing the round object with a handle is a ladies mirror. It could also be a fan, or even a fancy magnifying glass.
wayt_10 Clear 3.5" bottle embossed:
horizontal: ("NW&B" monogram)
vertical: DR N. WAYT & BRO / DRUGGISTS / STAUNTON VA.
base: W T & CO / A
wayt_07 Clear 4.1" bottle embossed:
horizontal: ("NW&B" monogram)
vertical: DR N. WAYT & BRO / DRUGGISTS / STAUNTON VA.
wayt_11 These clear bottles are embossed with a logo that is very similar to the one on the two bottles above, except it doesn't have an "N". I'm listing them here because I suspect they are from Wayt & Brother, but that is uncertain. They are 4.8" & 3.9" tall, embossed:
horizontal: ("W&B" monogram)
base: B W
wayt_13 This bottle has a different style of "W&B" monogram from the bottles above, as the W & B are not on top of each other. This bottle also has a partial label.
It is a clear 6.5" tall bottle (front & rear views shown), embossed:
horizontal: W&B (in a circle)
vertical: DR N. WAYT & BRO / DRUGGISTS / STAUNTON VA.
base: B B & CO / PATD
label: No___ Dr.___ / Directions___ / (logo of vessel hanging from mortar & pestle with NW&B monogram) / FROM Dr N WAYT & BRO / Druggists / No 16 West Main Street / STAUNTON, VIRGINIA.
wayt_08 Aqua 5.5" (broken) bottle embossed:

wayt_12 This is the building at 16 W. Beverly Street (formerly Main Street), the site of Dr. N Wayt's drug store. The building looks pretty old, so it might be the original building that housed the drug store. Photo was taken April 2012.
wayt_14 This is Sheet Music for a song called "Last Night", in the "Bromo-Seltzer Collection of 74 Popular Songs". On the bottom, in red letters, is printed:
