Dairy Location
The Feb 20, 1949 issue of the Washington Post on page B8 says that George Gillingham
was a descendant of Quakers who acquired some of George Washington's farm lands in
1846. It goes on to say that Gillingham has a 122-acre dairy farm on what was
formerly Washington's Dogue Run farm.
Also, The Fairfax County Circuit Court Historic Records Office has deeds from the early
1900s showing land that George Gillingham purchased near Dogue Run, Pole Road, and
Old Mill road2. So his dairy farm was in that area.
That area is in the Mount Vernon section of Fairfax County. But the bottle below lists
the address as Alexandria VA, and another bottle from this dairy lists the address as
Accotink VA. I don't think this is an indication that the dairy moved, I think these
are just different names for the same area in Fairfax County.
The Aug 20, 1929 issue of the Washington Post on page 4 references prize winning
guernsey cattle, some of which were from the Meadow Brook farm.
The Aug 9, 1933 issue of the Washington Post on page 4 lists George Gillingham
as one of 3 farmers from Fairfax County in a committee to consider the provisions
f the national wheat act.
The Nov 2, 1901 issue of the Washington Post newspaper, on page 2, mentions a
"Meadow Brook Farm, Lewinsville, Fairfax County, Virginia, about 2 1/2 miles
from Falls Church". This appears to be either a misprint or a reference to a
different dairy farm with the same name.
