Bergner & Engel

Company Names, addresses, dates1:
Bergner & Engel Brewing Co, Md ave c 9th NW (1881-1887)
Bergner & Engel Brewing Co, Va ave c 6th SW (1888-1900)
The Jerome Bottle Co, Va ave c 6th SW (1901-1902)
Grasser & Brand Brewing Co, Va ave c 6th SW (1903-1908)

Notes:
Brewery was based in Philadelphia. They apparently had a Washington DC branch.
An ad in the February 2 1881 Washington Post listed H.L. Dauterich as their agent. It also listed 3 other DC bottlers who bottled Bergner and Engel's beer: Chr. Dickson, John Nass and William Zanner.
There is another newspaper ad shown below that lists a different set of bottlers, but I don't know if that ad is before or after 1881. It lists the beers as "Lager", "Tannhauser", and "Culmbacher".

Bergner & Engel started in DC at MD Ave & 9th Street NW, then moved to VA Ave & 6th Street SW. When they left DC, that latter address became home to the Jerome Bottle company for 2 years, then the Grasser & Brand Brewing for 6 years. This graphic from the Jerome Bottling Company letterhead is presumably the same building that housed the Bergner & Engel bottling plant. The full letter is shown later in this web page.
