Notes:
Edward Abner (1834-1913)2 was born in Weisbaden Germany3.
His obituary says he came to Washington DC and started in the "cafe" business in 18633.
I don't know how a "cafe" differs from a "saloon", but he is listed in city directories
as a "saloon" owner from 1866-1900. He's also listed as a "bottler" from 1878-1886.
I found no indication that he brewed his own beer, so it's likely he bottled someone elses beer.
Bottles:
book # 1 Left bottle is a green 9" blob top and right is a teal 9.5" blob top with lightning stopper. They are both embossed: round slugplate: E. ABNER / WASHINGTON / D.C. back: THIS BOTTLE / IS NEVER SOLD The right bottle is also embossed with a fancy "EA" trade mark on the base, which is shown on the next row. |

book # 1 This is a smaller version of the teal bottle above. It's a 7.8" tall, teal blob top bottle with a somewhat unusual shape, embossed: round slugplate: E. ABNER / WASHINGTON / D.C. back: THIS BOTTLE / NEVER SOLD base: TRADE / (E A logo) / MARK |

book # 1 This bottle's slugplate looks the same as the large bottles above, but the embossing on the back is different. It is a 9.5" aqua blob top bottle, embossed: round slugplate: E. ABNER / WASHINGTON / D.C. back: THIS / BOTTLE / NOT TO BE / SOLD |
