Charles Ewald
Company Names, addresses, dates1:
Ewald Bottling Works, 701 N Washington, Alexandria VA (1914-1917)
Notes:
Charles Leo Ewald (1883-1957)2 worked in the bottling and the
packing department of the
Robert Portner Brewing Company from 1908
to 19131.
Charles started his own bottling company in his home at 701 n Washington Street
in 1914. He bottled soda pop including Coca-cola at his bottling plant.1,3
His house cought on fire in 1916, but luckily it was insured4.
He was still listed as a bottler in the 1917 city directory, so he apparently
got his bottling business going again, albiet breifly.
Charles's occupation bounced around after that.
In the 1918 directory his occupation was listed as a "packer".
He was listed as a Grocer in the 1919 directory, and a confectioner from 1920-1924.
Both the Grocery business and the Confectioner business were listed at his house
at 701 n Washington Street.1
He requested to put a Gasoline Tank in front of his house in 19195.
It may have taken a while for that request to get granted, because it wasn't until
the 1926-1936 city directories that he was listed as running a Filling Station at
his house at 701 n Washington Street.
His WW-II draft registration card in 1942 listed him as retired.
Charles' older brother
John Alexander Ewald (1878-1935)6
worked for the
Robert Portner Brewing Company from 1907
to 1916, as a manager of the bottling department. He may have been Charles'
boss during some of those years.
