George H. Gray was partnered with his father in the
"Thomas Gray & Son" Grocery Store from 1888-18911
By 1894, George had started his own business. It was described as a
"Barroom and wholesale whisky store"2
Besides the bottle below, there is also a Flask from Washington DC
embossed with his name.3.
In 1894, one of his employees lost a finger in an accident with a
beer bottling machine4.
In March of 1897, his building at 9 Monroe Street in Anacostia was
burned in a 5-store fire.
He had recently installed several new bottling machines. There was
$6000 worth of damage done, and his insurance only covered $3000.2
Based on city directories, he never recovered his liquor business.1
