Notes:
Frank McKnew (1839-1898) is listed in Washington DC city directories as a Grocer1,2.
He held a wholesale liquor license for many of the years he ran his grocery store, which helps explain why his name is on the beer bottle shown below. He also sold hard liquor, based on an ad I saw for Durham Rye Whisky3.
I suspect he didn't actually brew any beer, but instead bottled beer that someone else brewed. I couldn't find anything to tell me which brewery provided the beer, or even whether or not it was a local brewery.
There was a "McKnew & Bell" listed as a Grocer at 405 Pa Ave in Washington DC directories from 1866-67, but that was Nathan McKnew. I couldn't find evidence as to whether or not Nathan and Frank were related.
