Notes:
John H Schlueter (born 1865 in South Carolina2) ran a bottling company at 1601 5th Street. The name became "Northwestern Bottling Co" starting with the 1908 directory. The company stayed there until 1934.
In 1902, Schlueter was listed as a bottler & wholesale Liquor dealer, with an Estimated Pecuniary Strength of $3000-$5000, and a credit rating of "fair"3.
There is an advertisement below that indicates Northwestern bottling company bottled beer for the Abner-Drury brewery. That is supported by a bottle I've seen in a friend's collection that is embossed with NORTHWESTERN BOTTLING COMPANY but has an Abner-Drury label on it.
The address 1601 5th NW shows up as "Gridiron Club Beverages" from 1936-1941. In the 1948 and 1951 directories it was listed as Barq's Bottling Co.

These bottles don't say "NORTHWESTERN" on them:
schlueter_03 book # 627
These bottles are 9.5" BIM crown tops with a flag embossed on them. The left one is aqua, the center one is clear, and the right one is sun colored amethyst. All 3 are embossed the same on the front:
front: JOHN H. SCHLUETER / BOTTLER / 1601 5TH / STREET / N.W. / NOT TO BE SOLD / REGISTERED

tombstone slug plate: J.H. SCHLUETER / 1601 / 5TH ST. N.W. / WASH. D.C.
schlueter_15 book # 629
These are both 9.5" BIM SCA/clear crown tops. The difference is that the one on the left has Schlueter's name spelled wrong ('eu' vs. 'ue'). The one on the right has the correct spelling. There's roughness around the 'ue' on the one with the correct spelling, so I suspect that the bottle mold was modified to fix the spelling. They are embossed:
front (left bottle): J. H. Schleuter / NO-1601-FIFTH ST. N.W. / WASHINGTON, D.C.
front (right bottle): J. H. Schlueter / NO-1601-FIFTH ST. N.W. / WASHINGTON, D.C.
back: REGISTERED
schlitz_compare This shows one of the bottles above next to a Schlitz bottle. Do you think maybe Mr. Schlueter was trying to confuse his customers into thinking they were buying Schlitz?
schlueter_05 book # 630
This is a 8.25" SCA BIM crown top, embossed:
front shoulder: J. H. SCHLUETER
front heel: REGISTERED 1914

Other Items:
stopper_01 This is a porcelain stopper. It is marked with red letters in a black circle:
"J.H. SCHLUETER / 1601-5th, St. N.W. / WASH. D.C.
ad_from_1909 This is an advertisement from the "Hunter's Official Guide to Washington, 1909". It shows that Abner-Drury beer was bottled by the Northwestern Bottling Co.

Gridiron Beverage Co. Items:

(The Gridiron Beverage Company took over the Northwestern bottling plant at 1601 5th Street NW in 1936)

gridiron_01 This is an orange, white and brown label for Hildebrandt's 3-2 Near Beer. It says:
label: Hildebrandt's 3-2 / 12 FLUID OUNCES / DELICIOUS / NEAR BEER / MADE FROM THE CHOICEST MALT AND HOPS AND / BOTTLED UNDER THE MOST SANITARY CONDITIONS. / CONTAINS 1/2 of 1% BENZOIC ACID / GRIDIRON CLUB BEVERAGE CO . / WASHINGTON, D.C. / DOES NOT CONTAIN MORE THAN / 1/2 of 1% ALCHOHOL BY VOLUME.
I have to wonder (since this is a 'near beer') if the Gridiron Club Beverage company was in operation during prohibition - but I can't find any evidence of that.
