Notes:
Robert Blish Macoy (1861-1931)3 started in the drug business working for
Dr. J.B. Gorell in 1880. After 4 years he moved to Orange
and spent 4 years there working for "Johnson and Row" for another 4 years. In 1888, he bought
out the drug store of O.C. Cole .4
Macoy's building was originally built for O.C. Cole after Cole's
store had burned down, and was at the corner of East and Davis Streets (202 E. Davis Street),
which is across from the Masonic Temple building. 1
In March of 1923, Macoy sold his store to Phil Clore of Roanoke, and retired5.
But in May he came out of retirement and bought back his store from Clore, who was suffering
from ill health 6.
In 1924, a description of Macoy's drug store said it had a soda fountain, and that Macoy had 5
daughters who helped out at the store4.
In August of 1926, The store was sold to W.A. "Pattie" Smith and R.A. "Scott" Johnson,
who renamed it the Fairfax Pharmacy. At the time of the sale, the owner & proprietor
of Macoy's store was J.G. Williams Jr., so sometime between 1924 & 1926 Macoy had sold
his store to Williams, but Williams had kept the store name "Macoy's". 2
