Dr. Powhatan Stanley Schank (1862-1935)2
had a Petersburg drugstore in the 1880s.1
The 1882 directory had his store located at the corner of Halifax
and Gill, but subsequent directories have the store at 153 Halifax,
which had formerly been the store of
E.R. Beckwith.
Schank doesn't show up in Petersburg city directories after 1888.1
Apparently he moved to Norfolk, where he became the city physician under the
Board of Health.3
It appears he changed the spelling of his last name from "Schank" to
"Schenck" at some point, as all the early references I see use "Schank"
and all the later references use "Schenck".
His gravestone says "Schenck", but find-a-grave lists his parent's last
name as "Schank".2
