Wildwood Farms Dairy
Company Names, addresses, dates:
Wildwood Farms Dairy, Herndon, VA (c.1925-1935) 1,2
Notes:
The earliest newspaper reference I could find for the Wildwood Farms Dairy
was November 13, 1925 - a 'help wanted' ad seeking a "Man and Wife" for the
dairy. 1
A June 1926 newspaperpaper had a WANTED ad for a young man to help with
the retail Milk Business at the dairy, and it said that "Geo. M. Tucker"
was the manager. 3
But a December 1926 newspaper had a WANTED ad for a milk truck driver,
that said to contact "A.E. Steele". So I don't know if Tucker was
replaced by Steele as the owner, or if maybe Steele was the owner and
Tucker was the manager during that time. 4
A December 1929 ad said the farm was for sale. It included a description
of the farm, saying it had: a modern home, a modern brick dairy barn w/ 2
silos, another large barn for stock and feed, a modern 4 room brick dairy
house, a fine herd of cows, a fine delivery route, and that milk sells
for 15c per quart. 5
Almost 2 years later, in September 1931, there was an ad saying that the
dairy farm was "For Rent" by A.E. Steele.
In 1933, Raymond Carson Printz (1888-1968)6
was proprietor of the dairy,
so it must have changed hands sometime between 1931 and 1933.
An ad described how Printz's milk bottles were marked (which matches the
bottles below), and said that he used 1 quart, 1 pint, 1/2 pint, and 1/4
pint bottles. The point of the ad seemed to be to warn his competitors
not to use his bottles.7
A newspaper article in August 1935 about Printz said that his Wildwood
Farm employed 5 men.8
And finally, an ad in the October 4, 1935 Fairfax Herald announced that
the retail trade of the Wildwood Dairy of Herndon was being replaced by the
the Hazel Dairy
of Falls Church. So presumably the Wildwood dairy went out of business at
that point.2
